The Reverend Dr. Henry L. Masters, Sr. is a native of Waco, Texas. He is a graduate of A.J. Moore High School (Waco), Paul Quinn College (then in Waco) from which he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1968, Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University (Dallas) from which he received a Masters of Theology Degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Ministry Degree (D-Min.), with a project/dissertation in Spiritual Formation in 1990. A Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) Degree from the Houston-Tillotson College (Austin) was conferred in 1990.
Dr. Masters, Sr. has had a distinguished ministerial career. Ordained as a United Methodist minister in 1972, Dr. Masters, Sr. has served in the Central and North Texas Conferences. In 1978 he was appointed as pastor of the Hamilton Park UMC (Dallas). Under his leadership the church grew from 300 -1400 members. In June 1990, he was appointed as the District Superintendent of the Dallas South District of the North Texas a Conference of the United Methodist Church. While in this position he also organized and pastored the Jubilee UMC (Dallas) from 1994-1995. From 1995-1997, he pastored the historic St. Paul UMC in downtown Dallas while still serving as a district superintendent. In June 1997, Dr. Masters, Sr. became fulltime pastor of St. Paul. Because of his experience and skill in urban church ministries, Dr. Masters, Sr. has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Perkins School of Theology as coordinator of Urban Ministry.
Urban Ministry and Spiritual Formation are significant passions for Dr. Masters, Sr. He has been a consultant with the Upper Room, does workshops on Spiritual Formation, and speaks on Urban Ministry topics throughout the United States. He also served on and provided leadership to many church, civic, and community boards and agencies. Current community service include: Chairman of the Board of The Holman Community Development Corporation, the National Academy for Spiritual Formation Forum (Upper Room), Planning Committee of SCUPE (Seminary Consortium for Urban Pastoral Education) in Chicago, Board of Ministry in California Pacific Conference and The Development Board of Africa University (located in Zimbabwe, Africa).
Across the years Dr. Masters' has been recognized and honored for his leadership. These honors include, being chosen one of 65 Lilly Foundation Scholars, at Duke University (with portions of his research paper published in the 1996 Circuit Rider Magazine, a professional magazine for United Methodist clergy), participant in a symposium in conjunction with the opening of Africa University (Zimbabwe), South Central Jurisdiction Conference delegate and reserve delegate to the General Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1992-1996.
Dr. Masters, Sr. was appointed as the third pastor of the historic Holman United Methodist Church, Los Angeles, California, in April 2001. Holman is the largest United Methodist Church in Los Angeles with a membership in excess of 2,000. Already his leadership has been felt as Holman has received over 800 new members in his first three years as pastor. With a recent surge in ratings, Dr. Masters is now preaching to an audience of 30,000 on a live Broadcast on KJLH, 102.3 F.M., each week in Los Angeles. He is in frequent demand as speaker at conferences and revivals.

Dr. Masters is married to S. Dianna and they have three children; Henry Jr., a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta; Imani, a graduate of Spellman College and a Ph D. student at the University of Michigan; and Mia, a second year student at California State University, Sacramento.
